New York Attorney General Letitia James has responded to the indictment of a New York doctor by a Louisiana grand jury. The doctor was charged for providing abortion care.
In her statement, Attorney General James emphasized that "abortion care is health care." She criticized the criminalization of abortion services as "a direct and brazen attack on Americans’ bodily autonomy and their right to reproductive freedom."
James described the legal actions from Louisiana as a "cowardly attempt" to use the law against providers from other states. She asserted that such measures are "unjust and un-American."
Attorney General James assured that New York will continue to support healthcare providers in delivering essential services. She stated, "Medication abortion is safe, effective, and necessary, and New York will ensure that it remains available to all Americans who need it."
