Marc H. Silverman, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Anfernee D. Dancy, 28, from Waterbury, has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Vernon D. Oliver delivered the sentence in Hartford, which includes an additional 30 months of supervised release for unlawful possession of a firearm.
Court documents reveal that on August 22, 2023, Waterbury Police attempted to stop an SUV driven by Dancy. He reversed into a police cruiser and fled on foot but was apprehended after a struggle. A search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded Jimenez Arms, Inc. 9mm handgun, crack cocaine, a digital scale, and $282 in cash.
Dancy's criminal record includes felony convictions in Connecticut for burglary in the first degree, risk of injury to children, and failure to appear in the first degree. Federal law prohibits individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition that have moved across state or international borders.
Since his arrest, Dancy has remained detained and pleaded guilty on October 7, 2024, to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) along with the Waterbury Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean P. Mahard prosecuted the case.
This prosecution is part of the Justice Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program aimed at reducing gun violence and violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The initiative focuses on fostering trust within communities and supporting organizations that prevent violence while setting strategic enforcement priorities.
