Umar Abdul Waheed, also known as Terry Evans, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for illegal firearm possession. The sentence was delivered by United States Chief District Judge Jeffrey U. Beaverstock.
Court documents reveal that in June 2024, Waheed visited the Mobile County Community Corrections office in Alabama while having outstanding state warrants. These warrants were related to threats he allegedly made with a firearm at a local construction site days earlier. Upon his arrest on these warrants, officers found a firearm in the vehicle he used to reach the Community Corrections office. As a convicted felon, Waheed is legally prohibited from possessing firearms.
Judge Beaverstock not only imposed the prison sentence but also mandated a three-year supervised release following Waheed's incarceration.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney Beth Stepan prosecuted the case.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that unites law enforcement and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence. Launched on May 26, 2021, this strategy emphasizes building trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
