Statement on Officer-Involved Shootings

Office of the Attorney General announced it has completed the review of four incidents involving officer-involved shootings. 

These include an October 11, 2022, incident in Greenville involving seven officers with theGreenville Police Department and two deputies with the Washington CountySheriff’s Office; an August 22, 2023, incident in Canton involving four deputieswith the Madison County Sheriff’s Office; and a January 4, 2024, incident inBeaumont involving five officers with the George County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and MississippiHighway Patrol. In all three incidents, the Attorney General’s Office found theuse of force was justified.

In addition, on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, a Hinds County Grand Juryindicted former Capitol Police Officer Jeffrey Walker and current CapitolPolice Officer Michael Rhinewalt on two counts each of aggravated assaultrelated to an August 14, 2022, officer-involved shooting. The incident wasinvestigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecutedby the Attorney General’s Office. While this case is in active litigation, our officewill not comment further on the matter.Pursuant to Section 45-1-6 of the Mississippi Code, the reviews followed aninvestigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
