The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection held interviews on January 24, 2025, to fill a vacancy in the 8th Judicial District Court. After interviewing six candidates, the Commission selected three nominees. These names will be forwarded to Governor Lombardo, who has thirty days from receipt to make an appointment.
The vacancy in Department Y arose following the retirement of Judge Stephanie Charter. The nominated applicants are Nevada attorneys who meet specific criteria: they must be at least 25 years old, have ten years of legal experience, and possess two years of legal practice and residency in Nevada.
Governor Lombardo is expected to appoint one of the nominees by February 24, 2025. All district court judges in Nevada will serve terms expiring on January 4, 2027.
The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection includes seven permanent members and two temporary members for each selection process. The permanent members consist of the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the Governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. There are restrictions on appointments regarding political party affiliation and county representation. Temporary members are appointed for each selection process by both the Governor and State Bar.
