The Vermont Attorney General's Office and the Vermont Human Rights Commission have issued a joint statement reinforcing their dedication to upholding laws that protect against gender identity discrimination.

The statement emphasizes Vermont's commitment to being a place where individuals can live freely and openly, underscoring the state's leadership in safeguarding LGBTQIA+ rights. It affirms that Vermonters are legally protected from gender identity discrimination in workplaces and public accommodations.

"Vermont’s motto, 'freedom and unity,' reflects our values," the statement reads. "This is a place where people can live freely and openly, and where we stand together to defend our neighbors."

Both offices pledged continued enforcement of these protections despite any federal policy changes. They stressed that businesses, public agencies, housing providers, and employers must not discriminate based on gender identity.

"Our offices are committed to ensuring that Vermont remains a safe and supportive place for non-binary and transgender people, and for their families and loved ones," they stated. "We are proud to do this work on behalf of all Vermonters."

Individuals who believe they have experienced discrimination are encouraged to contact the relevant offices through provided links for assistance with issues related to housing, public accommodation, state employment or private-sector employment.
