Dr. Larry Bucshon, who recently retired after seven terms in Congress as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Indiana's Eighth District, has joined Holland & Knight as a senior policy advisor in its Public Policy & Regulation Group in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Bucshon was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 and most recently served as a senior member of the prominent House Committee on Energy and Commerce. On the committee, he served as vice chair of the Health Subcommittee and as a member of the Energy, Climate and Grid Security Subcommittee and Innovation, Data and Commerce Subcommittee.
Prior to becoming a member of Congress, Dr. Bucshon was a practicing cardiothoracic surgeon and was board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. As a congressman, he was a member of the House GOP Doctors Caucus, which is made up of Republican members who have a professional background as medical providers, and most recently served as vice chair of the caucus. In that role, Dr. Bucshon tirelessly advocated for a more stable Medicare payment system for physicians. His efforts earned him recognition from the American Medical Association for his leadership in preventing significant Medicare physician payment cuts, among other accomplishments.
During his tenure in Congress, Dr. Bucshon also championed the advancement of patient-centered healthcare reforms that support innovation and give patients access to high-quality, affordable and timely care, while also ensuring that patients and their doctors have the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions. He was instrumental in shaping the original 21st Century Cures Act and has taken a leading role, alongside Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), in advancing Cures 2.0, which builds on the landmark act by prioritizing the acceleration of medical innovation and enhancing access to cutting-edge treatments. Additionally, he has advocated for advancing energy policies that ensure the utilization of all sources of energy to make the nation energy independent and drive down the cost of energy for families and businesses on Main Street.
"Larry's deep understanding of healthcare policy and track record of working across the aisle on these issues make him a great fit for our firm," said Rich Gold, leader of Holland & Knight's Public Policy & Regulation Group. "He also brings significant experience with energy policy, an incredibly active area for our group that is poised to keep growing. Larry was a remarkably effective member of Congress, and we are fortunate to have him as an advocate for our clients."
"It was an honor and privilege to serve as a member of Congress, and I'm proud of the impact I was able to make, particularly in the healthcare sector. I look forward to leveraging my experience on the Hill to continue influencing policy across a number of critical areas. Holland & Knight is the ideal platform to achieve those goals," Dr. Bucshon said.
Dr. Bucshon earned an M.D. degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin and remained there to complete a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During this time, he enlisted with the United States Navy Reserve and served for nearly 10 years before being honorably discharged.
