A Marion man has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing firearms. Yasir Jinnah, 33, pleaded guilty on August 13, 2024, to one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
According to the plea agreement, Jinnah admitted to knowingly possessing firearms as a felon and an unlawful user of marijuana on February 13, 2023, March 31, 2023, and April 26, 2024. He was previously convicted in Illinois state court in May 2012 for the unlawful sale of a firearm.
During the years 2023 and 2024, Jinnah posted images and videos on social media depicting himself with firearms and marijuana. On February 13, 2023, his car was stopped by an Iowa State Patrol trooper on Interstate 80 for a traffic violation. A drug dog alerted officers to the presence of drugs leading them to discover a loaded Glock pistol and three loaded magazines in his vehicle.
On March 31, during a search warrant execution at his Cedar Rapids residence, authorities found multiple loaded pistols and magazines in his bedroom. Further searches at his Marion home on April 26 revealed additional firearms including a shotgun.
Jinnah was sentenced by Chief Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids to serve a term of imprisonment lasting thirty months followed by three years of supervised release. He remains in custody awaiting transfer to federal prison as there is no parole option within the federal system.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt with investigations conducted by various law enforcement agencies including the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). This initiative aims at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities.
