United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that Ray Rosalez, a Worthington, Minnesota man, has been sentenced for escaping from custody. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schrier handed down the sentence on January 13, 2025.
Rosalez, aged 41, received a 17-month prison term under the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
In February 2024, Rosalez was indicted by a federal grand jury for escape from custody and later pleaded guilty in November of the same year.
Previously, in November 2022, Rosalez had been convicted in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and was sentenced to four years and three months. On January 28, 2024, while residing at a residential reentry center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota as part of his custody with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, he left without permission. He was apprehended on May 30, 2024, by members of the Sioux Falls Police Department Violent Crimes Unit.
The U.S. Marshals Service conducted the investigation into this case with Assistant U.S. Attorney Beau J. Blouin prosecuting.
Rosalez has been remanded back into federal custody following his sentencing.
