Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield has appointed Steven Berman as his Special Counsel. Berman brings over 25 years of experience in private legal practice, having worked at his own law firm and previously as a shareholder at Stoll Berne in Portland. His expertise includes complex business and securities litigation, consumer disputes, and election law. He has appeared in various state and federal courts, arbitration and regulatory bodies, as well as appellate courts.
Berman holds a bachelor's degree from Amherst College and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He also served as a law clerk for Justice Susan Graber on the Oregon Supreme Court.
In his new role, Berman will lead the working families’ agenda for Attorney General Rayfield. This initiative aims to establish a labor enforcement team within the Department of Justice to protect workplace rights for all Oregonians. Additionally, he will contribute to shaping the consumer protection agenda by addressing issues such as predatory lending, scams, identity theft, credit fraud, and abusive insurance practices. Part of his responsibilities will include investigating violations of the Unlawful Trade Practices Act (UTPA) in Oregon.
“Protecting everyday consumers and supporting working families are two of the most urgent priorities for my administration,” stated Attorney General Rayfield. “I am confident that Steve will bring the leadership and expertise we need to expand and improve the state’s efforts to make sure all Oregonians are treated legally and fairly.”
