Ladarius Cannon, a resident of Mobile, Alabama, has been sentenced to 96 months in federal prison for illegal firearm possession as a previously convicted felon. United States District Judge Callie V.S. Granade delivered the sentence.
Court documents reveal that in April 2023, the Mobile Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident in Mobile County. The homeowner reported Cannon's presence with her adult granddaughter and a firearm inside her home. A witness saw Cannon discharge the weapon at least once indoors. Investigators found three casings and documented interior damage. Concurrently, neighbors reported seeing Cannon on their security camera holding a firearm to a female at their front door. Footage captured him pressing the gun against her body and saying, “don’t run from me.” Police apprehended Cannon and recovered the firearm near his vehicle.
Cannon has eight prior felony convictions, including violent crimes, which prohibit him from possessing firearms. At the time of this offense, he was on probation for shooting into an occupied building.
Judge Granade imposed a 96-month incarceration term followed by three years of supervised release after prison discharge. This federal sentence will run consecutively to Cannon's current 15-year state probation revocation sentence.
The case was investigated by the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Beth Stepan prosecuted it for the United States.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement levels and communities. On May 26, 2021, PSN launched a strategy focusing on fostering community trust and legitimacy, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
