The Circuit Court of the Second Circuit, which covers Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi, is currently accepting applications for the position of independent grand jury counsel. This role comes with compensation as stipulated by law.
According to Article I, Section 11 of the Constitution of the State of Hawaiʻi, an independent counsel must be appointed whenever a grand jury is impaneled. The appointed counsel's responsibility is to advise grand jury members on matters presented before them.
The appointment process follows the guidelines set out in Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (§612-51 to §612-57). The chief justice of the state supreme court appoints grand jury counsel for each of the state's four judicial circuits. Eligible candidates must be licensed to practice law in Hawaiʻi and not be public employees.
