The Circuit Court of the Third Circuit on Hawaiʻi Island is inviting applications for the role of independent grand jury counsel in Hilo and Kona. The appointed counsel will receive compensation as determined by law.
According to Article I, Section 11 of the Constitution of the State of Hawaiʻi, an independent counsel must be appointed whenever a grand jury is convened. This counsel's role is to advise the grand jury members on matters presented before them.
The chief justice of the state supreme court appoints grand jury counsels for all four judicial circuits in Hawaiʻi, as per Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (§612-51 to §612-57). Eligible candidates are those licensed to practice law in Hawaiʻi who are not public employees.
Interested applicants should submit a letter expressing their interest along with a resume by April 15, 2025. Applications should be sent to Chief Judge Wendy M. DeWeese at Keahuolū Courthouse, Kailua-Kona. Additionally, copies should be faxed or emailed to Robert D.S. Kim, Chief Court Administrator.
