United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy | U.S. Department of Justice

United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy has announced his resignation, effective January 17, 2025, from his position as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. The announcement was made after Levy submitted his resignation to United States Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Levy assumed the role of Acting U.S. Attorney on May 19, 2023, and was later appointed as U.S. Attorney by Attorney General Garland in November 2024 following two nominations by President Biden for the permanent role. During his tenure, he participated in two subcommittees of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee and was involved with the Human Trafficking Work Group.

Reflecting on his time in office, Levy stated: “Serving as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts has truly been the highlight of my career.” He expressed pride in leading a team dedicated to upholding law and justice without bias.

Under Levy's leadership, several significant cases were prosecuted. These included charges related to Sandra Birchmore's death; a $650 million resolution against McKinsey & Company concerning Purdue Pharma's opioid marketing; charges involving sensitive drone technology intended for Iran; and cyberstalking cases involving former eBay employees. His office also led a $574 million enforcement action against Raytheon for government contract overcharging and achieved substantial recoveries under the False Claims Act.

The newly formed Human Trafficking and Civil Rights Unit secured numerous convictions since its inception in 2022 under Levy's guidance. Other areas where notable prosecutions occurred include public corruption, child exploitation, hate crimes, police accountability, fentanyl trafficking, and gun violence.

Levy’s legal career includes previous service with the Department of Justice starting in 1997 before moving to Ropes & Gray in 2004 where he held various leadership roles until returning to serve as First Assistant U.S. Attorney from January 2022 through May 2023.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary B. Murrane will take over as Acting U.S. Attorney following Levy’s departure after her long tenure with the Department of Justice spanning sixteen years.
