A former officer of the Jackson Police Department has admitted guilt in a case involving false statements during a firearm acquisition. Torrence Donnell Mayfield, 53, confessed to purchasing a firearm for another individual on October 26, 2021. The transaction occurred at a pawn shop holding a Federal Firearms License. As part of the purchase process, Mayfield completed a form indicating that he was buying the firearm for himself, which was not true. Making false statements to acquire firearms is prohibited under federal law.

Mayfield's sentencing is set for March 4, 2025. He could face up to ten years in prison. The sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors.

The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi and Special Agent in Charge Robert A. Eikhoff of the FBI.

The FBI is handling the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Herbert S. Carraway and Charles W. Kirkham are prosecuting.
