Attorney General Merrick B. Garland has announced the recipients of the Seventh Annual Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Community Policing. Among those recognized is Detective Tyler Norman from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The award honors law enforcement officers who show exceptional dedication to building trust, promoting community engagement, and enhancing public safety.

“Community policing is essential to building trust and ensuring public safety,” stated Attorney General Garland. “These officers have gone above and beyond their duty to foster partnerships with the communities they serve. Their work is an inspiration to us all and a reminder of the profound impact law enforcement can have on individuals, neighborhoods, and society.”

Detective Norman has been noted for his relentless pursuit of justice, which has disrupted gang activity and established him as a leading expert in this field across the county. His extensive efforts include countless hours of investigative work resulting in numerous arrests of violent street gang members and seizures of firearms and narcotics, significantly strengthening public safety in the region.

U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah expressed her gratitude: “I want to thank Detective Norman for his outstanding and selfless work to protect our citizens and keep the community safe,” she said. “Congratulations on this prestigious achievement.”

The award recognizes individual state, local, and Tribal sworn officers, deputies, and troopers for their exceptional efforts in community policing across three areas: criminal investigations, field operations, or innovations in community policing.

Awardees were selected from a nationwide pool of nominees based on their achievements in fostering safer, more inclusive communities.

The Department of Justice commends these officers for their service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to their communities. Further information about the awards can be found at www.justice.gov.
