Two individuals from Council Bluffs have been sentenced to federal prison for firearms charges. Anthony Michael Huff and Bobbie Jo Adkins, both 37, were found guilty of possessing firearms as felons.
In December 2022, law enforcement executed a search warrant at their shared residence in Council Bluffs. Authorities discovered a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in a bedroom alongside a marijuana grow lab, and ammunition was located in the living room. Photos on Adkins's cell phone showed the shotgun, with Huff reportedly telling Adkins "we got the gun."
Both Huff and Adkins are prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior felony convictions. Huff was convicted in 2012 for two counts of terroristic threats in Nebraska, while Adkins was convicted in 2015 for possessing a firearm as a felon in Iowa.
Huff has been sentenced to 37 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Adkins received a longer sentence of 48 months, also followed by three years of supervised release. The federal system does not offer parole.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal from the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentences. The case was investigated by several agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; the Council Bluffs Police Department; and the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, this strategy emphasizes trust-building within communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
