Michael John Mullen, born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away in 2024. He was raised alongside his sisters Molly and Margo and attended local schools where he excelled in sports. Mullen pursued higher education at the University of Notre Dame before serving as a Marine officer globally for four years. He later attended Georgetown Law School, forging many lifelong friendships.
Mullen's career spanned over three decades in Washington D.C., where he met his wife Jean Hill. He worked as a lawyer for the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees, contributing to legislation such as the federal Rules of Evidence and Criminal Code. Later, he practiced privately before dedicating his expertise to the North Dakota Health Department and Attorney General's Office.
Known for his dedication and humility, Mullen mentored many young professionals including his children. His approach to law was thoughtful and insightful, driven by compassion for others. Colleagues admired him for his commitment to public service.
In 1982, Mike and Jeanie began vacationing in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, eventually making it their home after Jeanie retired. They enjoyed family time there with activities like skiing and hiking. A lifelong learner, Mullen engaged in lectures and courses while enjoying reading materials such as the New York Review of Books.
He maintained active bar licenses throughout his life and participated in state Bar Association meetings regularly. In 2021, he returned to Notre Dame through the Inspired Leadership Initiative program which he cherished deeply.
Mullen is survived by his wife Jean; children Melissa (with sons Sam and Aidan), Meredith (with Chuck), Mary Denise (with Dan), Michael; sister Margo; brother-in-law John; numerous relatives; friends; nieces; nephews; grandchildren Seba, Clara, Willow, Henry, Dottie; daughter-in-law Kayleigh; partner Kalesha. He was preceded by parents Denise & Kenneth Mullen along with sister Molly Volkerding.
A celebration of life is planned for summer 2025 in Waterville Valley.
