Gregory L. Thorpe, Jr., a 28-year-old resident of Carmel, Indiana, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison following his guilty plea for making a materially false and fictitious statement during the acquisition of a firearm. The sentencing was carried out by United States District Court Chief Judge Holly A. Brady.
In addition to the prison term, Thorpe will also face three years of supervised release. According to case documents, in the summer of 2021, Thorpe purchased a handgun from a licensed firearms dealer and attempted other firearm purchases while providing false information about his residential address. In May 2022, during a traffic stop in Hendricks County, one of the firearms purchased by Thorpe was found in the trunk of his vehicle along with 2.9 kilograms of fentanyl pills.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with support from the Hendricks County Sheriff Department and the Plainfield Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to strengthen PSN based on principles such as fostering trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence before it occurs, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
