A Brazilian man has been sentenced in a Boston federal court for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. Jose Antonio Moreira Martins Desouza, aged 39, received an eight-month prison sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton. Following his imprisonment, Desouza will undergo three years of supervised release.

In September 2024, Desouza admitted guilt to the charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. A federal grand jury indicted him in July 2024. His previous deportation occurred on November 14, 2012. Despite this, he reentered the United States illegally at an unspecified time following his removal.

Desouza's illegal presence came to attention when local police arrested him on May 22, 2023. Immigration authorities detained him on June 26, 2024.

The announcement of Desouza's sentencing was made by Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Todd Lyons, Field Office Director of Boston's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm from the Major Crimes Unit.
