California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a consumer alert due to an increase in accidental shootings involving children accessing improperly stored firearms. Despite existing laws that make it a crime to store firearms in a manner accessible to unsupervised minors, firearm-related accidents among adolescents have become a pressing public safety issue in the state.
Attorney General Bonta emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership and safe storage practices. "Unfortunately, there has been a rise in accidental and preventable deaths," he stated. "We are seeing reports weekly of children accessing guns that are not being properly stored. We respect responsible gun owners who take action to safeguard themselves and loved ones from these horrific tragedies."
Recent incidents have highlighted the consequences of improper firearm storage, often resulting in fatal accidents when children gain access to loaded guns. These unsafe practices have also been linked to school shootings and adolescent suicides. According to data from the California Legislature, 75% of school shootings involve unsecured firearms at home, while over 80% of teen suicides with firearms involve guns belonging to someone in their household.
In response, new legislation will be implemented starting January 2026. Senate Bill 53 mandates secure storage of firearms using DOJ-certified devices or gun safes when not in use. Assembly Bill 3064 requires manufacturers to mark firearm safety devices with identifying information for recalls or thefts.
The Attorney General's office offers guidelines for safe firearm storage: separating guns and ammunition, using approved safety devices like trigger locks, storing unloaded firearms in locked containers, and employing both locking devices and storage containers for maximum security.
