U.S. Attorney Duane Evans has announced that Alvaro Luis Alcerro-Banegas, aged 38, has pled guilty to illegal reentry into the United States after deportation. This plea was entered on December 10, 2024, and involves violations of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a) and Section 1326(b)(1).

Court documents reveal that Alcerro-Banegas returned to the U.S. following his deportation on September 2, 2022. The Honduran national came under scrutiny by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after being arrested by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office on March 2, 2024. Previously, on January 18, 2017, he was sentenced to an eighteen-month federal prison term in the Southern District of Florida for illegal reentry after deportation.

Alcerro-Banegas now faces a potential sentence of up to two years imprisonment along with a fine that could reach $250,000. He may also be subject to one year of supervised release and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100. Due to his prior felony conviction, there is also a possibility of an enhanced sentence extending up to ten years imprisonment.

In this case's investigation, U.S. Attorney Evans acknowledged the efforts of both the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carter K.D. Guice Jr., from the General Crimes Unit, is handling the prosecution.
