An Adair man has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for firearms-related charges. Randy Scott Shuey, aged 43, was found guilty of possessing a firearm not registered under the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Act.
Court documents reveal that in December 2022, Shuey was discovered with a silencer attached to a rifle equipped with a high-capacity magazine. A subsequent search in January 2023 uncovered another silencer at his residence. Neither silencer was registered as required by federal law.
Upon completing his prison sentence, Shuey will serve an additional three-year term of supervised release. It is noted that there is no parole option within the federal system.
The announcement came from United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa. The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Adair Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The program emphasizes building trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
