Attorney General Gentner Drummond has issued warnings to four voice service provider companies accused of transmitting illegal robocall traffic on their networks. This action is part of an investigation conducted by the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force, which includes Drummond and 50 other attorneys general.
The task force has sent warning letters to the companies involved, outlining their findings. "Illegal robocalls go beyond creating a nuisance," Drummond stated. "Oftentimes they are scams designed to steal personal or financial information from anyone who answers the call. These companies are on notice that illegal robocall activity will not be tolerated."
The coalition of attorneys general has shared its findings with the Federal Communications Commission's enforcement bureau for further consideration and potential action.
The companies receiving warning letters include KWK Communications, Inc., Inbound Communications Inc., AKA Management Inc., and CallVox LLC. KWK Communications reportedly received at least 129 traceback notices between 2020 and 2022, involving calls linked to IRS, Social Security Administration, auto warranty, and utilities scams. In one month in 2022 alone, KWK allegedly routed over 20,000 calls with illegally spoofed numbers and more than 8.7 million calls using invalid caller ID numbers.
Inbound Communications received at least 63 traceback notices between 2021 and 2022 for suspicious activity related to imposter scams. It is estimated that Inbound allegedly routed over 28.4 million DirecTV and cable discount scam robocalls in a single month in 2022. The Federal Trade Commission had previously issued a cease-and-desist demand regarding these calls.
AKA Management was notified of at least 129 instances of suspicious activity between 2020 and 2022 involving government imposter scams and tech support scams. The company is estimated to have allegedly routed approximately 12.1 million Amazon and Apple imposter robocalls in one month in 2022.
CallVox LLC received more than 47 traceback notices during the same period for facilitating unlawful or suspicious robocalls within the U.S., including thousands of calls made to individuals on the Do Not Call list using illegally spoofed numbers.
