California Attorney General Rob Bonta has announced the formation of a multistate coalition aimed at addressing gun violence by holding members of the firearms industry accountable. This coalition includes 18 attorneys general and seeks to leverage existing civil liability and consumer protection laws to curb irresponsible practices within the industry.

Attorney General Bonta stated, “Gun violence is a national issue that demands a united response, and we will work to eliminate reckless practices that endanger our citizens.” He emphasized the coalition's commitment to ensuring national safety without limiting responsible gun ownership. The focus is on targeting dangerous and illegal business practices that prioritize profits over public safety.

The states in this coalition aim to hold manufacturers, distributors, and sellers accountable for unlawful sales, gun trafficking, and other actions that risk public safety. Many member states have already pursued civil enforcement actions under their respective laws:

- In 2021, California sued three ghost gun kit manufacturers and sellers, resulting in a judgment prohibiting sales in the state and $675,000 in penalties.

- New Jersey has taken legal action against gun stores for sales to unverified buyers and improper storage of firearms.

- Maryland and the District of Columbia sued federally licensed dealers for illegal firearm sales leading to weapon trafficking.

- The District of Columbia won a $4 million judgment against Polymer80 for selling unserialized guns.

- Minnesota took action against Fleet Farm for negligent firearm sales.

- Washington settled with a retailer for unlawfully selling large-capacity magazines.

The coalition includes California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
