America First Legal (AFL) has initiated an investigation into the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following allegations that the agency withheld disaster relief for Hurricanes Helene and Milton from homeowners displaying Trump signs. AFL claims this action violates citizens' First Amendment rights, prompting a formal request for an investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General.
AFL argues there is substantial evidence indicating government abuse in this situation. In response, several members of Congress have called for a comprehensive investigation into FEMA's handling of hurricane relief guidance.
The organization criticizes FEMA's actions as another instance of bureaucratic infringement on free speech rights. AFL states it will continue to challenge such practices, whether related to social media misinformation or alleged punitive denial of hurricane aid based on political expression.
Will Scolinos, counsel for America First Legal, stated: “For four years, the Deep State has waged war on Americans’ freedom of speech. This latest example may be one of the most cruel, abusive, and egregious yet—denying homeowners desperately needed hurricane relief assistance because of who they supported politically. AFL will work tirelessly for accountability and to safeguard Americans’ constitutional rights.”
