Today, Governor-elect Josh Stein issued a statement following the North Carolina General Assembly's decision to override Governor Cooper’s veto of SB382. Stein criticized the bill, describing it as a "power grab" rather than a measure for hurricane relief.
"The people of western North Carolina are desperate for help from their state government. Yet, this bill is a power grab, not hurricane relief," said Stein. He condemned the Republican members of the General Assembly for what he described as using people's urgent need for aid to mask political motivations.
Stein called on the legislature to prioritize their responsibilities and assured them that he would be willing to collaborate constructively. "The legislature needs to step up and do its job. If they do, they will find a good faith partner in me. I’m ready to get to work," he added.
The statement underscores ongoing tensions between political leaders in North Carolina over legislative priorities and emergency response efforts.
