Attorney General Kris Mayes expressed satisfaction following a United States District Court ruling that blocked the merger between Kroger and Albertsons. The preliminary injunction halts the $24.6 billion deal, a decision that Mayes considers beneficial for consumers, workers, and small businesses nationwide.

"Today's decision by a federal judge to extend the preliminary injunction blocking the $24.6 billion Kroger-Albertsons merger is a major victory for consumers, workers, and small businesses across the country," stated Mayes. She further added confidence in the outcome of any potential legal proceedings should Kroger and Albertsons pursue them.

Mayes highlighted her office's efforts on behalf of Arizona consumers, crediting her antitrust team for their work. "Their dedication and expertise played a pivotal role in achieving this outcome, which will help protect Arizona families from higher grocery prices, fewer choices, and diminished competition."

The Attorney General argued that had the merger proceeded, it might have reduced consumer options while increasing prices and eliminating jobs. In Arizona specifically, where many communities depend on affordable grocery stores, she believes this decision prevents negative impacts.

"I applaud the court for taking this step to protect consumers and uphold the values of fair competition," said Mayes. "I remain committed to protecting hardworking Arizonans against corporate greed and consolidation."

The investigation into the proposed merger began in February 2023 when Attorney General Mayes launched an antitrust probe accompanied by town halls statewide to gather public input on its potential effects. By February 2024, she joined forces with the FTC and other attorneys general from both parties in litigation aimed at blocking the merger.
