Attorney General Ashley Moody has issued warnings to four voice service providers for their role in transmitting millions of suspected illegal robocalls. As a member of the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force, Moody is investigating these companies and has shared findings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for further action.
"As part of our Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force, we have been investigating several voice service providers and have concerns about companies that are allowing millions of scam robocalls to ring through to Americans’ phones," said Attorney General Moody. "We’re putting these companies on notice that their actions may violate state and federal consumer protection and telemarketing laws."
The task force has sent warning letters to KWK Communications, Inc., Inbound Inc., AKA Management, Inc., and CallVox LLC. Each company received multiple traceback notices indicating high volumes of calls associated with various scams.
KWK Communications was identified for routing more than 20,000 calls with illegally-spoofed numbers and over 8.7 million calls using invalid caller ID numbers in one month during 2022. Inbound Inc. allegedly routed over 28.4 million DirecTV and cable-discount scam robocalls in a single month that same year, despite a cease-and-desist demand from the Federal Trade Commission.
AKA Management reportedly routed about 12.1 million Amazon and Apple imposter robocalls in one month during 2022. CallVox received more than 47 traceback notices between 2020 and 2022 for suspicious robocalls, including those targeting individuals on the Do Not Call List.
The task force warns these providers that continued transmission of such calls could lead to further legal action.
Recent actions by Attorney General Moody include legal proceedings against Avid Telecom and Smartbiz Telecom over illegal robocall activities, as well as announcing investigations into other voice service providers through the nationwide Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force comprising 51 bipartisan attorneys general.
