California Attorney General Rob Bonta has joined a bipartisan group of 51 attorneys general in issuing warning letters to four telecommunications companies. These companies are accused of transmitting suspected illegal robocall traffic on their networks, including calls impersonating government officials and involving scams related to auto warranties, tech support, utilities, the IRS, and Social Security Administration. The effort is part of an ongoing initiative to protect consumers from such calls.
Attorney General Bonta stated, "The robocalls that disrupt our lives and bombard us with never-ending voicemails aren’t just annoying; in many cases they are illegal and a vehicle for harmful scams." He expressed pride in joining the national effort to safeguard consumers from these threats.
The warning letters target KWK Communications, Inc.; Inbound Communications, Inc.; AKA Management, Inc.; and CallVox LLC. They have been instructed to cease transmitting unlawful call traffic immediately as it violates state and federal laws. Failure to comply could lead to further legal actions by the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force. The findings have also been shared with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for potential further action.
The Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force comprises 51 attorneys general who work together to investigate and take legal action against entities responsible for significant volumes of illegal robocalls across the United States.
Attorney General Bonta remains dedicated to enforcing consumer protections within California and nationwide. His efforts include advocating against illegal robocalls through various coalitions and initiatives throughout 2024. This includes supporting FCC proposals aimed at increasing the effectiveness of measures against such calls and participating in legal actions against companies facilitating unlawful robocalls.
In May 2023, Bonta was part of a coalition that filed a lawsuit against Avid Telecom for allegedly initiating billions of unlawful robocalls involving scams related to Social Security Administration, Medicare, and employment.
