McGuireWoods partner Steven J. McCool again has been named to Washingtonian magazine’s prestigious list of Top Lawyers in Washington, D.C., for white collar criminal defense. He has been recognized on the list continuously since 2012.
Featured in the December 2024 issue, the list is compiled through nominations from previous Top Lawyers honorees and reporting and research by the magazine.
McCool, a former Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, has built a distinguished career defending clients in high-profile criminal prosecutions and investigations. With a career spanning more than 30 years, he has served as lead counsel in more than 75 criminal and civil jury and bench trials.
McCool, who represents companies and individuals in matters involving the honest services fraud, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, export controls, bank fraud, money laundering, securities fraud, government contracting fraud and other complex financial crimes, notably won a full acquittal in 2023 as lead trial counsel for an international sports broadcasting executive in a FIFA bribery case after an eight-week jury trial.
In addition to his Washingtonian Top Lawyers recognition, McCool is ranked as a leading trial lawyer and government investigations and white collar litigator by Chambers USA, Chambers Global and The Best Lawyers in America. He became a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2013, an honor reserved for the top 1% of trial lawyers in the United States and Canada.
McCool is the seventh partner with U.S. Department of Justice service to join McGuireWoods in 2024, expanding a deep bench of former federal prosecutors and enforcement officials in the firm’s litigation practices. He is the latest in a series of major additions to McGuireWoods’ D.C. office in recent months.
