The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched an inquiry into the death of Christopher Ferguson. The incident occurred on December 5, 2024, following an encounter with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in Brooklyn.
On that afternoon, NYPD officers pursued Ferguson and confronted him as he attempted to exit a vehicle near Utica Avenue and Park Place in Brooklyn. According to reports, Ferguson allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers, prompting them to discharge their weapons, resulting in Ferguson being struck. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. A firearm with an extended magazine was reportedly recovered at the scene.
Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is responsible for evaluating incidents involving police or peace officers that may have resulted in civilian deaths due to actions or omissions by the officers. This assessment applies whether the officer is on-duty or off-duty and regardless of whether the deceased individual was armed or unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated. If OSI determines that an officer may have caused a death, it conducts a comprehensive investigation.
