California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a warning to consumers about potential scams and fraud during the holiday shopping season. As Black Friday and Cyber Monday approach, Bonta advises Californians to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from fraudulent purchases.

“As the holiday season approaches and folks look for the best deals, consumers should slow down and check their safety list twice,” said Attorney General Bonta. “I urge Californians to know their rights, familiarize themselves with shopping pitfalls, and report scams and illegal activity to my office and local law enforcement agencies. Happy and safe shopping, California!”

Bonta highlighted several common scams that shoppers should be aware of:

1. **Gift Card Draining**: Scammers record pin numbers from unpurchased gift cards, using them once money is loaded onto the card by unsuspecting buyers. Shoppers are advised to ensure gift cards are sealed with intact protective covers and retain receipts in case of compromise.

2. **Hidden Fees**: Under Senate Bill 478 (SB 478), effective July 1, 2024, businesses must include all mandatory charges in listed prices except certain taxes and shipping costs. Consumers noticing violations should discuss compliance with businesses or file complaints.

3. **Gender-Based Price Differences**: Known as the "Pink Tax," this practice involves charging different prices for similar goods based on gender. AB 1287 prohibits such pricing differences, urging consumers to report any violations.

4. **Lack of a Gender-Neutral Products Section**: AB 1084 requires large retail department stores in California to maintain a gender-neutral section for childcare items or toys as of January 1, 2024. Consumers can report non-compliance if they observe inadequate sections.

Attorney General Bonta also provided tips for safe shopping:

- Compare products through research.

- Be cautious of deals that seem too good.

- Verify business legitimacy through online feedback.

- Use credit cards for better charge dispute options.

- Ensure websites are secure before providing personal information.

- Avoid links from unsolicited text messages.

- Close unnecessary accounts to protect data privacy.

- Understand terms of zero-interest financing offers.

- Be wary of "Buy Now, Pay Later" financing due to potential high interest rates.

Consumers can find more information on these topics through various resources provided by the Attorney General's office.
