Attorney General Todd Rokita has joined a coalition of 24 states in filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, supporting age-verification measures for online pornography to protect minors. The court is reviewing a constitutional challenge to a Texas law that mandates websites hosting significant amounts of obscene material to implement such systems. This Texas law mirrors legislation passed in Indiana, which aims to restrict minors' access to pornography.
"Not only do states have the authority to prevent pornography websites from providing children with hardcore porn, but they have a responsibility to do so," said Attorney General Rokita. He emphasized the harm that exposure to pornography can cause minors, affecting them emotionally and socially.
The brief, co-led by Indiana and Ohio, highlights that many adult industries like alcohol and gambling already use age-verification technology. The coalition argues that similar measures for online pornography are necessary and constitutional.
