Troutman Pepper has been recognized as the recipient of the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP)’s 2024 Pro Bono Partner of the Year Award in honor of the extraordinary services that the firm has provided to our nation’s veterans.

Troutman Pepper was selected by NVLSP staff for its exemplary work as a leading Lawyers Serving Warriors® partner. The firm has been instrumental in handling TSGLI (the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection Program) cases, TSGLI advocacy and research projects, discharge upgrade cases, and Combat-Related Special Compensation cases. Since beginning its partnership with LSW in 2017, Troutman Pepper has significantly expanded its pro bono efforts.

In 2024 alone, Troutman Pepper has accepted 11 discharge upgrade cases, five TSGLI cases, three Combat-Related Special Compensation cases, and three appeals at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. Additionally, the firm has undertaken two projects related to TSGLI, researching the retroactive applicability of regulatory amendments and drafting NVLSP comments on proposed regulatory changes to TSGLI’s ADL Loss standards.

Troutman Pepper has also excelled in collaborative efforts, partnering with LSW for the limited scope discharge upgrade file review project and virtual discharge upgrade screening interview clinic. In April 2024, in collaboration with Capital One, the firm helped LSW screen veteran applicants by accepting nine discharge upgrade file review matters. In June 2024, Troutman Pepper and Capital One again teamed up to assist LSW by meeting with 14 veterans and preparing narrative summaries of the clinic interviews to aid LSW attorneys in screening. Troutman Pepper has accepted six of these clinic attendees’ discharge upgrade cases for full scope representation.

“When I left military service to attend law school and become an attorney, I promised myself that I would stay connected to the military community by dedicating my pro bono practice to assisting veterans, and I have done so since my 1L summer,” said Nicholas Ramos, an attorney in Troutman Pepper’s White Collar + Government Investigations Practice.

Ramos, along with attorney Timothy Bado, has been instrumental in building the firm’s relationship with NVLSP. The NVLSP’s 2024 Pro Bono Partner of the Year award was presented to the firm at the annual benefit reception on November 21, 2024, in Washington, D.C. Amie Colby accepted the award on behalf of the firm.

Each year, Troutman Pepper attorneys dedicate thousands of pro bono hours in support of nonprofits, immigrants, military veterans, children, the wrongfully convicted, civil rights and social justice initiatives, and so many more. Learn more at troutman.com/pro-bono.
