The case was presented by Jim Craig, Division Chief for Civil Litigation and Constitutional Defense at the Attorney General’s Office, alongside Deputy Attorney General Kyle Grigsby. They defended the state before District Court Judge Jason D. Scott.
Attorney General Raúl Labrador commented on the state's stance: "Idaho’s law was written specifically to protect both the life of the mother and her unborn child, with exceptions that account for a doctor’s good-faith professional judgement." He expressed gratitude towards the attorneys defending Idaho's Defense of Life Act.
During cross-examination, Dr. Katharine Wenstrom, an expert witness for the plaintiffs, acknowledged that OBGYNs should treat both pregnant women and their unborn children as patients.
