The Maryland Judiciary is set to commence Phase V of its COVID-19 emergency reopening plan. Starting Monday, October 5, 2020, all courts in Maryland will be fully operational, resuming jury trials in both criminal and civil cases across circuit courts statewide.

Circuit administrative judges are available for media interviews and tours of the safety measures implemented at courthouses. These precautions aim to protect jurors, the public, judges, and Judiciary staff from COVID-19. Interviews require appointments through the Judiciary’s Government Relations and Public Affairs office at [email protected].

According to the Administrative Order Clarifying COVID-19 Health Measures in Courthouses and Judicial Branch Facilities, individuals entering a courthouse must wear a mask or face covering. They must also complete a written or verbal questionnaire regarding any COVID-19 symptoms and undergo a contactless thermometer temperature check.

As of August 31, 2020, Maryland's circuit courts and the District Court of Maryland have entered Phase IV of the reopening plan. This phase included resuming non-jury trials and contested hearings in civil, family, and juvenile cases.

The interviews with Maryland circuit administrative judges will include a tour of the jury assembly area, courtroom, and security checkpoint to demonstrate new personal protective equipment (PPE) precautions at local courthouses. These sessions are scheduled between September 10 – October 1, 2020, depending on local judges' availability.

For interview arrangements or inquiries, contact the Maryland Judiciary’s Government Relations and Public Affairs office via email at [email protected]. The use of cameras within courthouses requires prior approval. Consent should be obtained from all individuals being photographed.
