The Maryland Judiciary's Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO) is inviting students from kindergarten through eighth grade to participate in the 15th annual Conflict Resolution Day Bookmark Art Contest. This event is part of the national Conflict Resolution Month celebration, with entries due by November 13.
Students are encouraged to create bookmarks focused on themes such as peer mediation, apologizing, respecting differences, talking things out, solving problems together, listening, tolerance, diversity, inclusion, building peace, and alternatives to violence. The contest serves as an opportunity for teachers, parents, and students to discuss peaceful conflict resolution methods.
Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera of the Maryland Court of Appeals remarked on the impact of the contest: “We have received more than 10,000 entries since the Conflict Resolution Day Bookmark Art Contest began fifteen years ago. Participating in the annual bookmark contest helps to inspire thousands of students to resolve conflicts peacefully, learning both through the art project and the related discussions with their teachers and peers.” She added that creating art about preventing violence can foster awareness and empathy among students.
Due to COVID-19 considerations and to increase participation opportunities, submissions can be made via mail or online. Winners will be announced at a virtual awards ceremony in January 2021 via Zoom by Chief Judge Barbera.
Entries will be judged based on artistic merit and their message regarding conflict resolution or prevention. Originality is encouraged. Prizes include $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place across three age groups: grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Selected winning entries will be printed for distribution throughout Maryland to promote conflict resolution efforts.
