Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera has appointed Victoria Z. Sulerzyski as her chief of staff. Sulerzyski, who previously worked at the law firm Ober|Kaler in Baltimore, started her new role with the Maryland Judiciary on January 13.
"Victoria brings impressive experience and skills to a job that requires a wide-ranging combination of attributes and an ability to multitask, solve problems, prioritize and handle complex assignments, all fitted into a dedication of helping to achieve the Judiciary’s overall goals," Chief Judge Barbera stated.
Sulerzyski expressed her enthusiasm for the position: "I am honored to have been chosen by Chief Judge Barbera. It’s a privilege to serve the citizens of Maryland, and I’m excited to begin this new challenge." She added that one of her primary objectives is ensuring smooth and efficient operations within the Judiciary by collaborating closely with colleagues.
Before joining Ober|Kaler in October 2009, where she focused on estates, trusts, and assisting individuals with special needs, Sulerzyski was an associate counsel at Miles & Stockbridge from October 2007-October 2009. Her work included estate planning and administration, guardianships, veterans' affairs, and representation before school districts for individualized education plans. She also coordinated Ober|Kaler's pro bono medical-legal partnership with Kennedy Krieger Institute known as Project Heal.
Sulerzyski holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Maryland (1986), another in paralegal studies from University of Maryland University College (1996), and earned her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2005. She served as an administrative assistant and law clerk for retired Court of Appeals Judge Alan M. Wilner between July 2003-December 2006.
An active member of several legal associations including the Maryland State Bar Association and American Bar Association, Sulerzyski is involved in civic organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys' special needs section and Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates. She sits on boards for Kennedy Krieger Institute and PACT: Helping Children with Special Needs. Her advocacy includes testifying on disability issues before Congress and the Maryland General Assembly. In recognition of her contributions, she was named "Pro Bono Champion" by the American Health Lawyers Association in 2012 and received United Way's "Volunteer of a Lifetime" award.
