A Wilmington man has been found guilty in the 2023 murder of Cynthia Amalfitano. On November 1, 2024, Stephen Heck, aged 67, was convicted of Murder in the First Degree by a New Castle County Superior Court jury. The conviction comes after an investigation into the disappearance and death of Cynthia Amalfitano, who was 64 at the time and Heck's former partner. Her body was discovered in Carousel Park in Wilmington.

"This tragic loss highlights the grave consequences of domestic violence," stated Attorney General Kathy Jennings. "The defendant’s actions were chilling. I am grateful to our team and our partners in law enforcement for their commitment to bringing him to justice."

Acting New Castle County Police Chief Major Benjamin Feldmann remarked, "We commend our dedicated detectives and patrol officers for their outstanding work in this case. Their relentless efforts and the Attorney General’s Office’s meticulous prosecution have achieved justice for Cynthia. We stand with the Department of Justice in acknowledging the profound impact of domestic violence and the importance of ensuring closure and accountability in these tragic cases."

Cynthia Amalfitano was reported missing on September 25, 2023, after she failed to report to work. During the subsequent search, New Castle County police found her body in Carousel Park's underbrush. Evidence collected during the investigation included cell phone data, matching DNA, and bloodstains found in Heck's vehicle, all contributing to his indictment. An autopsy confirmed that Cynthia died from strangulation and blunt force trauma.

Heck faces life without parole at a sentencing date that has not yet been scheduled.
