A Wilmington man, Nasir Anderson, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for his role in the 2018 murder of Richard Young. On October 18, Anderson, aged 24, received a sentence of 102 years in prison, with all but 23 years suspended. This will be followed by probation on convictions of Murder Second Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Robbery First Degree, and Conspiracy Second Degree. The sentencing took place at New Castle County Superior Court.
The case involved a six-year investigation into the home invasion and subsequent murder of Richard Young on Market Street in Wilmington. Attorney General Kathy Jennings commented on the case stating: “This case, which lingered for years, demonstrates our dedication in pursuing justice for victims and their families.” She expressed hope that this outcome provides some closure to Young's family and reiterated the commitment to hold violent criminals accountable.
Chief Wilfredo Campos also remarked on the investigation's success: “The guilty plea and sentencing that resulted from this investigation underscore how hard our investigators work to bring justice in each of their cases.” He highlighted it as an example of their Cold Case Unit’s ongoing efforts.
On February 25, 2018, Anderson and an accomplice entered Young’s apartment with handguns and ski masks intending to rob him. During the robbery, Young was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries. Wilmington Police initially investigated but were unable to solve the case immediately as it went cold over time. However, in 2023, the WPD Cold Case Unit identified Anderson as a suspect. The second suspect had already been identified as someone who was killed later in July 2018.
