North Dakota Attorney General seeks deputy solicitor general

The Office of the North Dakota Attorney General is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy Solicitor General. The role, based in Bismarck, ND, focuses on constitutional issues, appellate advocacy, and litigation against the Federal Government.

Philip Axt, the Solicitor General, will oversee the selection process. The responsibilities include conducting legal research with a focus on constitutional law at both federal and state levels, drafting legal briefs and motions, staying informed about national legal developments affecting state interests, and assisting in developing litigation strategies. The Deputy Solicitor General will also advocate for the state in various courts and manage additional counsel retained by the state.

Applicants must be licensed to practice law in North Dakota or another state with plans to seek admission to the North Dakota bar within a year. High academic or professional achievement is required along with strong research skills using tools like Westlaw and historical dictionaries. Candidates should demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, a willingness to commit significant time to their duties, maintain confidentiality, uphold high ethical standards without disciplinary records, and work well with others.

Beneficial experience includes prior involvement in appellate brief writing or oral argument and managing complex litigation cases. The position offers a salary commensurate with experience along with benefits including health insurance for employees and families.
