Attorney General Michelle Henry announced the conviction of a Greene County woman, Tina Phillips, for vehicular homicide and related charges following a high-speed crash that resulted in the death of a mailman. The incident occurred in 2021 when Phillips was driving nearly twice the speed limit, veering off the road and striking Chad Varner, who was delivering mail on foot.

On Monday, Phillips, aged 49, was found guilty of several charges including homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, and involuntary manslaughter. The Office of Attorney General presented evidence at trial showing that Phillips was driving over 70 mph in a 40 mph zone when she lost control of her vehicle. Her car veered into a front yard where it hit Varner, causing his immediate death.

“This completely preventable tragedy serves as a reminder that reckless and careless driving can have deadly consequences,” stated Attorney General Henry. “No one expects to face this kind of danger when they go to work, and there is no good reason to ever drive in such a manner that puts so many people at risk.”

Phillips claimed to law enforcement that she could not recall much about the incident. The prosecution team included Senior Deputy Attorney General Kara Rice and Senior Deputy Attorney General Evan Lowry.
