Attorney General Phil Weiser has commented on the sentencing of paramedic Jeremy Cooper, who received 14 months of work release and four years probation for his role in the death of Elijah McClain. Weiser stated, "Today’s sentencing marks the end of a very long chapter. Close to four years ago, we were appointed as special prosecutor to investigate and potentially prosecute those responsible for the death of Elijah McClain."

Weiser emphasized that this sentence provides accountability for another individual who did not meet legal expectations and offers a measure of justice for McClain's family and loved ones. He added, "True justice, however, would be having Elijah alive today. His death was an unnecessary tragedy."

Reflecting on the events of August 24, 2019, Weiser noted that there were several actions officers and paramedics could have taken to prevent the fatal encounter. He acknowledged ongoing efforts to enhance integrity in law enforcement and improve first responder practices. "Elijah McClain’s memory will continue to inspire us to do that work," he concluded.
