On National First Responders Day, a significant development was announced regarding the mental health support available to first responders in Florida. Attorney General Ashley Moody, along with Tampa Bay Crisis Center President & CEO Clara Reynolds, Senator Jay Collins, and law enforcement leaders, revealed the statewide expansion of the First Responder Hope Line. This service provides round-the-clock assistance to first responders dealing with PTSD and other mental-health issues.

Attorney General Moody highlighted the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and first responders: “Law enforcement officers and first responders sacrifice so much to keep us safe. Often, they carry the tremendous weight of service and feel they have no one to help lighten their load.” She emphasized that recent devastating storms have added to their burden as these individuals put themselves at risk to aid others.

Clara Reynolds of the Tampa Bay Crisis Center stated, “Florida’s first responders face unique stress and trauma that is hard to comprehend. They are the first to run toward danger to help people. The recent hurricanes are just one example of this.” She expressed gratitude towards Senator Collins and Attorney General Moody for supporting the expansion which enables 24/7 access to support.

The statistics underscore the need for such initiatives. More than 80 first responders have committed suicide since 2019, with 12 deaths occurring this year alone. A study in North America found depression affects 34% of first responders, while anxiety impacts 33%. Notably, law enforcement officers are more likely to die by suicide than be killed on duty.

Originally launched in 2020 by the Tampa Bay Crisis Center covering five counties, the Hope Line has expanded its reach significantly over time due to increased legislative support spearheaded by Attorney General Moody and Senator Collins. This led to a $1 million allocation for further expansion during the last legislative session.
