Attorney General Kwame Raoul has partnered with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) to host an awareness event aimed at combating human trafficking within the transportation industry. The event, held at Joliet Junior College in Illinois, brought together transportation industry representatives, law enforcement, and government agencies to enhance their ability to identify and address human trafficking.
The initiative focused on educating transportation employees about recognizing signs of human trafficking and reporting them promptly. The program included prevention and awareness training, resources for various sectors like trucking and bus industries, a panel discussion with law enforcement, and insights from a trafficking survivor.
"Human traffickers exploit those who are most vulnerable, moving their victims frequently to avoid detection," Raoul stated. "Giving transportation workers the tools to identify signs that someone could be a victim of human trafficking will support law enforcement efforts to stop the perpetrators of these crimes."
Truckers Against Trafficking was founded in 2009 with the goal of involving truck drivers in combating human trafficking. Since its inception, TAT has expanded its reach within the transportation sector through training programs, partnerships with law enforcement, and advocacy efforts.
This collaboration is part of Attorney General Raoul's ongoing efforts against human trafficking. Under the 2021 Way Forward Act, law enforcement agencies are required to report annually on compliance with laws designed to foster trust between immigrant communities and police by limiting participation in federal immigration enforcement.
Earlier this year, legislation spearheaded by Raoul improved access to the Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Program. This program offers financial assistance for victims of violent crimes such as human trafficking.
The Attorney General’s Civil Rights Bureau works to protect civil rights across Illinois by enforcing anti-discrimination laws. The Violence Prevention and Crime Victim Services Division provides statewide support for crime victims. Additionally, Raoul's Workplace Rights Bureau focuses on protecting employment rights in Illinois.
