Justice Jay B. McCallum joins Council of Louisiana State Law Institute

Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Jay B. McCallum has been appointed to the Council of the Louisiana State Law Institute. This appointment was made by his fellow Justices of the Louisiana Supreme Court and is effective immediately.

Justice McCallum's educational background includes a bachelor's degree from Northeast Louisiana University, obtained in 1982, and a juris doctor degree from Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center, earned in 1985. His career began in general law practice at Rabun and McCallum in Union Parish. He served as an Assistant District Attorney before becoming a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1992 to 2002. Subsequently, he was a judge for the Third Judicial District Court from 2002 until 2018. In 2018, he was elected without opposition to the Second Circuit Court of Appeal and served there until his election to the Louisiana Supreme Court for District 4 in 2020. Justice McCallum is married to Deanna Dunham McCallum, Esq., with whom he has two children and two grandchildren.

The Louisiana State Law Institute was established under its current name in 1938 when it was chartered by the Legislature as "an official, advisory law revision commission, law reform agency and legal research agency of the State of Louisiana." Its mission is to promote clarity and simplification of Louisiana's laws, adapt them to present social needs, improve justice administration, and conduct scholarly legal research.

The mission of the Louisiana Supreme Court is "to preserve the integrity of the judiciary, to build and maintain public trust, to provide effective and efficient administration of justice in the Supreme Court, to ensure proper administration and performance of all courts under Supreme Court authority, and to ensure the highest professional conduct, integrity, and competence of the bench and bar."
