Charles B. Plattsmier, the Chief Disciplinary Counsel for the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board, has announced his retirement effective March 31, 2024. With nearly 28 years of service, Plattsmier is recognized as the longest-serving Chief Disciplinary Counsel in recent history.
Plattsmier attended Nicholls State University and later earned his juris doctor degree from Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1978. During his initial years in private practice, he held positions such as President of the St. Mary Parish Bar Association and a House of Delegates member of the Louisiana State Bar from 1983 to 1995. His involvement with the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board began in 1990 when he became one of its first lawyer hearing committee members and later served as a board member before being appointed Chief Disciplinary Counsel in 1996.
Throughout his career, Plattsmier contributed significantly to attorney discipline by authoring amendments to professional conduct rules and serving on various committees within both the Louisiana Supreme Court and the Louisiana State Bar Association. He has delivered over 400 lectures on ethics and professionalism nationwide.
Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice John L. Weimer praised Plattsmier's dedication: “Chuck Plattsmier served the members of the Louisiana State Bar Association and the general public admirably, as evidenced by his dedication to upholding the standards of professionalism incumbent upon all who hold the distinction of membership in the state Bar.”
Anderson O. “Andy” Dotson III has been appointed as Plattsmier's successor following a recommendation from the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board (LADB) approved by the Louisiana Supreme Court. Dotson has held various roles within the Disciplinary Board, including Vice Chairman and Chairman.
Chief Justice Weimer expressed support for Dotson's appointment: “Based on the recommendation of the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board and considering that adjudicative function of this Court is separate from prosecutorial role...the Court accepts...Mr. Dotson to fill position...”
Dotson received his bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University in 1996 and graduated magna cum laude with a juris doctor degree from Southern University Law Center in 2000. His previous roles include serving as Parish Attorney for Baton Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge until his recent appointment.
The mission statement for The Louisiana Supreme Court emphasizes preserving judicial integrity, maintaining public trust, ensuring justice administration efficiency, proper court performance under its authority, and promoting high professional conduct among bench members.
