Attorney General Todd Rokita is leading a coalition of states in opposing efforts to limit civilian access to legally manufactured ammunition. This initiative comes in response to a letter sent by Democratic attorneys general on January 9, 2024, urging the White House to investigate Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. The concern raised was about keeping military-grade and military-subsidized ammunition out of civilian hands.

Rokita emphasized the importance of the Second Amendment, stating, "The right to keep and bear arms is foundational to protecting all the rest of our liberties from the long arm of government overreach." He assured that his office would staunchly defend this right.

The potential implications of restricting military-used ammunition for civilians were highlighted by Rokita. He noted that such restrictions could extend to commonly used ammunition like 9mm and 12-gauge shotshells. "A tyrant’s tactic is to chip away at liberties little by little," he remarked, underscoring the necessity for Americans to have access to ammunition.

In their correspondence with the White House, Rokita and other states expressed their commitment "to take any and every action necessary to defend our citizens’ Second Amendment rights." They argued that gun violence perpetrators should face consequences rather than targeting firearm and ammunition manufacturers.

Rokita criticized those advocating for these restrictions as not prioritizing public safety. He stated, "We should be focused on the free flow of illegal weapons coming across our border – not taking aim at law-abiding patriots." He attributed this need for self-defense liberty partly to what he described as federal shortcomings in securing borders.

Additionally, Rokita pointed out an economic aspect: maintaining civilian access supports Lake City Army Ammunition Plant's operations and its workforce of 1,700 employees. This support indirectly aids national defense efforts. "The geopolitical threats to America’s national security have never been greater," he said, suggesting recognition for civilians who purchase from military contractors.
