Attorney General Todd Rokita is encouraging residents of Indiana to check the website IndianaUnclaimed.gov for unclaimed property that may belong to them. This initiative aligns with St. Patrick's Day, a time traditionally associated with luck.
"May the luck be with you this St. Patrick’s Day," Attorney General Rokita stated. "One of our top missions in the office is to reunite hardworking Hoosiers with their unclaimed property. This green holiday is a perfect time for Hoosiers to find a pot of gold."
In 2023, Rokita's office returned over $81 million in unclaimed property, surpassing the previous record set in 2014. On average, more than $1.5 million is returned weekly to residents, and there are still hundreds of millions left unclaimed.
The database of the Unclaimed Property Division includes some individuals with festive names like Ireland, Gold, Clover, Shamrock, and Green.
Types of property that might remain unclaimed include wages or commissions, money orders, safety deposit box contents, savings and checking accounts, refunds, credit card balances, cell phone bills, and DMV payments.
The Unclaimed Property Division undertakes an active outreach program to find rightful owners or heirs once they take custody of unclaimed property. Individuals and businesses have up to 25 years to claim these assets after they are reported.
